Editor's picks: all 38 Tokyo restaurants ranked (2026) by dietary handling, English menu and price

The short answer
The UMAMI HUNT desk marks 38 Tokyo restaurants as "Editor's pick". 22 of them handle at least one dietary restriction and 24 have an English menu. This page ranks all 38 by how easy they are for a visiting diner to use. The pick itself means we ate there and would send a friend; the rank is the order of ease within that set.
How the ranking works
Four criteria, applied in this order. It is not a verdict on flavour — every pick is a yes.
- Number of dietary restrictions handled — vegan, vegetarian, halal, gluten-free, dairy-free, pescatarian, kosher, nut-free, counting only what the venue page confirms
- English menu — yes > no
- Price band — cheaper first
- Ties broken by name
So the top of the list is "a companion with restrictions can eat here, you can order in English, and it won't hurt". Lower entries are not worse; the grand old houses simply handle fewer restrictions and cost more.

How to use this
- Someone in your group has a restriction → start at the top. Vegan washoku at SAIDO, halal sushi at Asakusa Sushi Ken and shojin cuisine at Sougo cover the most cases.
- One classic, done right → the old houses lower down: eel at Nodaiwa, tempura at Tempura Kondo, sukiyaki at Ningyocho Imahan.
- On a budget → the ¥ band (Udon Shin, Kaneko Hannosuke, AFURI, Umezono, Mihashi).
Browse by neighbourhood in where to eat in Tokyo by area, or filter by diet on find a restaurant.
Hours, prices and handling change. Check the "last verified" date on each venue page and confirm with the shop before you go.
