Charcoal-grilled unaju in a sugar-free Edo-style sauce
Unagi Izuei Honten is Ueno's most storied eel restaurant, tracing its craft back roughly 300 years and nine generations to the reign of the eighth Tokugawa shogun, Yoshimune, when the family ran a modest eel stall on the same plot beside Shinobazu Pond.
Little here has been simplified for scale. The seven-floor dining hall seats around 270 guests, and its tatami private rooms -- some fitted with chairs for guests who'd rather not sit on the floor -- look straight out over the pond and its lotus beds. The kitchen still works the Kanto way: eels are split along the back, steamed to render the fat, then finished over charcoal and lacquered in a tare made without added sugar, the base of the house's signature unaju. Expect a slower meal than a train-station eel counter -- courses run from a modest lunch set to an ¥8,800-and-up kaiseki for parties wanting a private room, and reservations are recommended for dinner and required for any tatami room seating three or more.
Practically, it's an easy stop for visitors. The English menu runs to roughly fifteen set meals with photos, staff are used to overseas guests, and the restaurant takes all major credit cards plus PayPay and Alipay, so there's no need to carry cash. It's open 11:00-21:00 daily, last food order 20:15, except New Year's Eve and Day. The menu is built almost entirely around eel and other seafood -- no meat mains -- which makes it a comfortable choice for pescatarian travelers, though there's no dedicated vegetarian tasting course. From Keisei Ueno Station it's a five-minute walk through the park, following the water around to the pond's north side.
