The busiest station in the world — and how to eat around it

Shinjuku Station moves more people than anywhere on earth, and the food packed around it can feel just as chaotic: neon Kabukicho to the north, the tower-hotel west side, and the calmer, greener pocket near Shinjuku Gyoen to the south-east. The trick is to point yourself at one good shop rather than wander the crowds. Happily, Shinjuku is unusually strong for travellers with dietary needs — certified-halal ramen, a fully halal wagyu bowl and cult vegan pancakes all sit within a few minutes of the gates.

Where to eat

For noodles, two stand out. Udon Shin is a perpetually-queued Tabelog Top-100 shop where every bowl of springy udon is cut and boiled to order — try the cult carbonara udon. Soba House Konjiki Hototogisu by Shinjuku Gyoen is famous for clam-and-truffle shio soba; it held a Michelin star in 2022-23 and now carries a Bib Gourmand, with a numbered-ticket system, so arrive early.

For Muslim travellers, Shinjuku is a rare cluster. Honolu Halal Ramen near Shinjuku-Gyoenmae serves Japan Islamic Trust-certified halal chicken in a tonkotsu-rich paitan — no pork, no alcohol. Halal Wagyu Ramen Shinjuku-tei crowns a 100% halal-certified bowl with seared A5 wagyu, with prayer space on hand. FUJIYAMA TOKYO offers a dedicated halal-certified course (separate utensils and storage) — but since the venue also serves alcohol, treat it as Muslim-friendly and request the halal course when booking. Bosphorus Hasan is a long-running Turkish kebab house using halal meat; it is Muslim-friendly / halal-meat rather than third-party certified, and serves alcohol on-site, so it suits diners comfortable with that distinction.

For plant-based diners, AIN SOPH. Journey is the Shinjuku birthplace of the cloud-soft 'Heavenly Vegan Pancakes', with gluten-free options on the same menu — a reliable all-day vegan stop.

Getting around

Use exits, not the centre: the Gyoen-side shops (Honolu, Konjiki, Bosphorus) cluster south-east, while AIN SOPH and Shinjuku-tei sit around Shinjuku-sanchome. Pick one meal, take the nearest exit, and let the directory's Shinjuku filter do the navigating.
