Wagyu sirloin and tiger prawn tempura in rice-flour batter

Tempura Asakusa SAKURA is a ten-seat counter restaurant on the 7th floor of a Kaminarimon high-rise, built around a genuinely rare promise: every dish, wagyu sirloin and tiger prawn included, is fried in rice-flour batter rather than wheat, and the kitchen holds a 2-star halal certification from the Japan Halal Foundation.

The room itself is the first surprise — cascading sakura blossoms hang from the ceiling year-round, turning the ten-seat counter into a permanent hanami, while chefs work an open kitchen close enough that you can watch each piece hit the light, easily digestible frying oil and crisp in real time. Dinner is built around two set courses, a 14-dish SAKURA omakase and a 10-vegetable omakase, plus a deluxe tempura rice bowl piled with wagyu, seafood, and seasonal vegetables that can be finished tableside as chazuke, soaked in dashi broth. A crisp fried shrimp head, served separately from the body, is offered as a crunchy extra for diners willing to try it. No pork or alcohol touches the kitchen, and a Muslim staff member oversees halal compliance daily; since 2025 the drinks list has also carried ORYVIA, a rice-based gluten-free craft beer, alongside sake pairings.

Seating is limited to ten and dinner service runs a tight hour, so reserve through TableCheck rather than walking in — dinner slots go fast. Course menus pause between 3 and 5pm, when only the tempura bowls are served, and the kitchen closes at 8:30pm. Staff speak English throughout the day, and the restaurant is a two-minute walk from Asakusa Station's Exit A4.
