Is wagyu halal? Where to eat certified wagyu in Tokyo

The short answer
Beef is a permitted (halal) meat in Islam, so wagyu can be halal — but it is not automatically so. At a normal steakhouse or yakiniku counter the wagyu is not zabiha (not slaughtered to Islamic rite), and the kitchen often finishes the meat with sake, mirin or soy-based sauces that contain alcohol. Marbled wagyu basted in butter and splashed with sake is the rule, not the exception. So the cut being beef is not enough on its own.
What makes wagyu halal
For wagyu to be halal it needs to come from zabiha-slaughtered cattle and be cooked without alcohol or cross-contamination with pork. That is exactly what a growing number of Tokyo venues now guarantee, several with formal halal certification for their beef. This is the certified-versus-Muslim-friendly line we define in the halal Tokyo guide.

What to check
Confirm whether the beef is halal-certified (third-party verified) or Muslim-friendly (no pork or alcohol but uncertified), and ask about the sauces and the grill. Standards differ by restaurant, so check directly before booking.
