Halal Restaurants in Nagoya: One Certified Kitchen, and How to Judge the Rest

The Short Answer
Only one halal operator in Nagoya can name a certifying body: Mega Kebab, whose central kitchen was certified by the Kyoto Halal Council in June 2017. It runs ten branches inside Nagoya city — not the three Osu counters most guides list — including two that serve until 04:00–05:00 and one that opens at 08:00. Everything else in Nagoya is Muslim-owned or Muslim-friendly by the venue's own description, with no third-party certification. All hours, prices and claims below were checked against the operators' own websites as of 2026-09-23.
The Only Certified Kitchen: Mega Kebab
Mega Kebab's own halal page states that the central kitchen was certified halal by the Kyoto Halal Council in June 2017 (「Mega Kebabセントラルキッチンは、2017年6月に京都ハラール評議会よりHALAL認証をいただいております」), that the company uses halal ingredients only and "no alcohol, pork, or non-halal animal-derived items whatsoever", and that most owners, store managers and staff are Muslim.
Read the certification precisely. The same page describes the chain's store-level approach as three steps: kebab is produced in the certified central kitchen, everything else is cooked with halal ingredients only, and restaurant-level halal certification is something the company is still pursuing (「レストランのHALAL認証取得を推進」). So this is certification at the kitchen and ingredient level from a named body — stronger than anything else in Nagoya, but not a per-store audit.

Elsewhere in Aichi the chain lists five more branches (Iwakura, Gamagori's Laguna outlet is summer-only, plus the three below). The three worth knowing if you are travelling are Airport Walk Nagoya (Toyoyama, 3F food court, 10:00–21:00), Chubu Centrair International Airport (Tokoname, Centrair 1-1, 4F food court) and Aichi-Togo (open 24 hours). The Centrair branch's listed hours on the chain's own store page read 19:30–04:00, which does not match a landside airport food court — treat that one as "check on the day" rather than a fact.
Prices come from the chain's published menu (tax included, listed for the Osu 3 branch; the page notes items vary by branch): pita-bread kebab from ¥700 chicken / ¥900 beef, roll kebab ¥800 chicken, kebab rice bowl ¥1,100, Iskender kebab ¥1,400–1,600, Turkish ice cream cone ¥500, North Indian curry ¥900. The menu page also publishes an allergen table — unusual for a kebab chain, and useful if you are managing both halal and an allergy.
Where to Eat Halal Late at Night in Nagoya
This is the answer almost no Nagoya halal guide gives, and it comes straight from the operator's store list. Both late-night counters are in the Sakae/Nishiki nightlife area, both are Mega Kebab, and both therefore run on the same certified central kitchen:
- Sumiyoshi (Sakae 3-2-29) — Friday and Saturday 19:00–05:00 (LO 04:30), weekdays 19:30–04:00. Closed Mondays and public holidays.
- Nishiki (Nishiki 3-7-5) — weekdays 19:30–04:00 (LO 03:30), Saturday from 19:00. Closed Sundays and public holidays.
At the other end of the clock, the Immigration Bureau branch in Minato-ku opens at 08:00 on weekdays (hot food from 10:30) — the earliest halal counter in the city on the chain's own list.
How to Read the Local Community List (and Why It Is Out of Date)
The most-cited local source is the restaurant list published by the Nagoya Islamic Centre (Nagoya Mosque). Before you use it, read what the mosque itself says about it:
- It lists restaurants that have menu items made with halal meat, and states plainly that whether the kitchen is a halal kitchen as defined by a certifying body is not taken into account.
- Each entry carries markers: M = Muslim owner, N = non-halal dishes are also served on site, A = alcoholic drinks are served on site.
- The information was collected by visiting the restaurants between July and September 2014, and the page's stated last update is 29 June 2020.
That makes it a map of the community, not a statement of today's status — and you can see the drift on the page itself. The mosque list marks TAXiM with the A (alcohol served) marker, while TAXiM's own website states that it ended alcohol service when it moved to fully halal (完全ハラール) operation in fiscal 2024. The restaurant changed; the list has not caught up. Treat any halal directory for Nagoya — this one included — as a shortlist to verify by phone, not as evidence.
Muslim-Owned and Muslim-Friendly, But Not Certified
None of the four below names a third-party certifying body. That is a real and useful category — it is simply a different claim from Mega Kebab's.
TAXiM (Higashi-ku, Higashizakura) — the best-documented of the four
Turkish and Italian cooking near Shinsakae. The official site states the move to fully halal in fiscal 2024 and the end of alcohol service; the mosque list marks it M / A — Muslim owner, alcohol served — the second half of which the restaurant's own site now contradicts (see above). From TAXiM's own access page: Higashi-ku, Higashizakura 2-15-39, Grandeur Higashizakura 1F, tel 052-931-3131, open 11:00–15:00 (LO 14:00) and 17:30–23:00 (LO 22:00), closing at 22:00 (LO 21:00) on Sundays, public holidays and Mondays, closed Tuesdays. Nearest stations, as given on the mosque list's own entry: Takaoka (Sakura-dori Line) and Shinsakae-machi (Higashiyama Line).
Ariana Restaurant (Higashi-ku, Tsutsui) — on the mosque list as Muslim-owned
Afghan and Iranian cooking alongside Indian curries — The Japan Times profiled it in 2015 as an Afghan-to-Iranian halal kitchen, while the mosque list files it simply as Indian — a short walk from Kurumamichi Station on the Sakura-dori Line, the nearest station the mosque list itself gives. The Nagoya Mosque list carries it as ARIANA / アリアナ, Indian, marked M (Muslim owner, with no N or A marker), at Higashi-ku Tsutsui 3-31-14, tel 052-937-3275. Note that third-party directories show the address as 3-31-13 and put it on the 2nd floor; the two do not agree, so call before you go. There is no official website, so we are not quoting hours or prices for it here.
SEDRA (Minato-ku, Jinbei-dori) — Egyptian and Arabian, self-described
An Egyptian and Arabian restaurant at Minato-ku, Jinbei-dori 1-17-1 — an address that appears only on third-party listing sites, which also put it about 36 minutes on foot from Arakogawa-Koen Station on the Aonami Line, so budget for a bus or taxi rather than a walk. It is not on the Nagoya Mosque list, has no official website, and names no certifying body anywhere we could find — so it is a self-described Muslim-friendly kitchen. Hours and prices appear only on third-party listing sites and are not confirmed by the restaurant; call ahead.
ASHIF HALAL KITCHEN (Showa-ku, Tsurumai) — Bangladeshi, self-described
Bangladeshi and Indian cooking at Showa-ku, Tsurumai 2-16-13, Heights Okada 1F — address and the ten-minute walk from Tsurumai or Higashi-Betsuin station come from its Tabelog listing, not from the venue. It does not appear on the mosque list, and it has no official website — "halal" here is the owner's own practice, not a named certification. As with SEDRA, we are not quoting hours or a buffet price we cannot confirm with the venue.
Traps to Avoid
- "No pork on the menu" is not halal. Ramen broths, dashi and sauces in Japan routinely use pork bones, pork fat or non-halal gelatin even when pork is not listed as a dish.
- Self-described halal and certified halal are different claims. Only Mega Kebab names a certifying body in Nagoya; four of the five venues here do not.
- Mirin and cooking sake hide in dishes that look alcohol-free — teriyaki glaze, simmered nimono, many sauces.
- A directory listing is not a certificate. Aggregator sites file restaurants under "halal" without auditing anything, and even the mosque's own list says it does not check for certified kitchens.
- Gelatin in desserts is often pork-derived unless the menu says otherwise.
Practical Tips
Ask at the counter: 「ハラール対応の料理はありますか?」 (Harāru taiō no ryōri wa arimasu ka? — "Do you have halal-friendly dishes?"). For a walkable cluster, Osu still wins: three Mega Kebab branches sit in and beside the same covered arcade near Kamimaezu Station, so if one is full you walk to the next. If you are based near Nagoya Station or Sakae, the Chunichi Building B1F and Kanayama counters both run 10:00–22:00 daily and are easier to reach than Osu after a day out.

Where a venue has no site of its own, the address is taken from a third-party listing and labelled as such in the text. Small independent kitchens in Japan change hours often — confirm same-day where you can.

常见问题
- Is there a certified halal restaurant in Nagoya?
- Mega Kebab is the only operator in Nagoya that names a certifying body: its central kitchen was certified halal by the Kyoto Halal Council in June 2017, and the company states it uses halal ingredients only, with no alcohol, pork or non-halal animal-derived items. The certification is at kitchen and ingredient level — the chain says restaurant-level certification is still being pursued. It has ten branches inside Nagoya city.
- Where can I eat halal late at night in Nagoya?
- Two Mega Kebab counters in the Sakae/Nishiki area run through the night on the same certified central kitchen. Sumiyoshi (Sakae 3-2-29) opens 19:00–05:00 on Fridays and Saturdays and 19:30–04:00 on weekdays, closed Mondays and public holidays. Nishiki (Nishiki 3-7-5) runs 19:30–04:00 on weekdays and from 19:00 on Saturdays, closed Sundays and public holidays. Hours are from the chain's own store list, checked 2026-09-23.
- Does TAXiM in Nagoya still serve alcohol?
- No. TAXiM's own website states it ended alcohol service when it moved to fully halal operation in fiscal 2024. The Nagoya Mosque restaurant list still shows TAXiM with the "A" (alcohol served) marker, but that page was last updated in June 2020, before the change.
- Is the Nagoya Mosque restaurant list a list of certified halal restaurants?
- No. The mosque states that it lists restaurants with menu items made from halal meat and does not take into account whether the kitchen is halal-certified by a certifying body. Entries are marked M (Muslim owner), N (non-halal dishes also served) and A (alcohol served), and the information was gathered by visits in 2014 with the page last updated on 29 June 2020 — so verify by phone before relying on it.
- Is there halal food at Nagoya's airports?
- Mega Kebab, whose central kitchen carries Kyoto Halal Council certification, has counters in the 3F food court at Airport Walk Nagoya (next to Nagoya Airfield in Toyoyama, 10:00–21:00) and in the 4F food court at Chubu Centrair International Airport (Tokoname, Centrair 1-1). The Centrair hours printed on the chain's store list look inconsistent for a food court, so check them on the day.
