Nakiryu is a twelve-seat tantanmen specialist tucked into a quiet stretch of Minami-Otsuka, five minutes on foot from Shin-Otsuka Station -- the kind of counter that punches far above its size.
The bowl to order is the tantanmen: thin noodles in a broth built on chicken and beef rather than the usual pork, layered with housemade chili oil, sesame paste, and a warm hit of sansho pepper and star anise that reads as fragrant rather than fiery. A clear shoyu ramen sits alongside it for diners who want Nakiryu's technique without the spice, and the handmade shrimp wonton is worth ordering as a side -- plump, lightly bound, and a favorite among regulars. The shop has been open since 2012 and earned one Michelin star for seven straight years (2017-2023) before settling into Bib Gourmand status, which it has now held for three consecutive years through the 2026 guide -- still Michelin-recognized, just filed under "great food, fair price" rather than starred. Seating is a tight counter built around the open kitchen, closer to cafe-quiet than typical ramen-shop clatter.
Two things to plan around: Nakiryu has run on a ticket system since February 2024, not a queue. Show up, take a numbered slip from the in-store tablet, and come back for your assigned 30-minute window starting from 11am -- there's no walk-in-and-wait line to join. And bring cash: no credit cards, e-money, or QR payments are accepted, and there's no English menu, so a translation app (or pointing at the tantanmen on the wall photo) does the ordering for you. Open 11:00-15:30, closed Sundays.
