Seasonal brown-rice set (ichiju-sansai) and steamed vegetables

Brown Rice by Neal's Yard Remedies is a fully vegan Japanese canteen tucked down a plant-lined walkway just off Omotesando, run by the British organic skincare brand as a genuine extension of its ethos rather than a side project.

The kitchen works almost entirely in the register of ichiju-sansai: rice, a soup, and a rotating trio of vegetable dishes that changes with the season. Regulars order the bamboo-steamed vegetable set, ten kinds of vegetables steamed to order and served with three dipping sauces alongside brown rice grown without pesticides in Toyama. The seasonal curry rice set, built on a house spice blend with tomato and onion, is the better bet if you're also avoiding gluten — it's the only dish on the menu confirmed wheat-free, since the miso soup and dipping sauces elsewhere carry it. The whole kitchen went fully vegan in April 2022, so there's no dashi or hidden animal stock behind a dish that merely reads as "vegetarian" — not something every canteen in the neighborhood can promise.

The room does a lot of the work too: warm wood tones, a narrow entrance walkway softened by bushes, and a small terrace that fills with plants (and, being pet-friendly, the occasional dog) come spring and summer.

A practical note: seating tops out at 43 (31 indoors, 12 on the terrace), and the restaurant is popular enough that a reservation matters — book ahead through TableCheck. Show up without one and the usual workaround is to leave your name or email and wait for a table to free up. Cards, IC cards, and QR payments (PayPay, Alipay) are all accepted, and while the doors stay open until 6pm, the kitchen stops taking food orders at 5 and drinks at 5:30.
