A neighbourhood that eats well

Omotesando is Tokyo's catwalk — a zelkova-lined avenue of architecture and flagship stores running down to Harajuku. Step off it and the backstreets of Minami-Aoyama and Jingumae are full of calm, design-conscious cafes and restaurants, many of them unusually friendly to plant-based and produce-led eating.

Plant-based, done with polish

Brown Rice by Neal's Yard Remedies has served seasonal brown-rice set meals (ichiju-sansai) since 2003 — an organic, mostly vegan canteen tucked just off the avenue. 8ablish is a fully vegan restaurant with a Mediterranean lean, good from breakfast to dessert. Both prove that 'vegetarian in Tokyo' can mean elegant rather than limited.

When you want the classic

For the area's signature indulgence, Maisen in Aoyama is a beloved tonkatsu house in a former bathhouse — the gold standard for a crisp pork cutlet. Produce-led Mr. Farmer near Omotesando does big vegetable-forward plates and all-day breakfasts that work for vegetarians and omnivores alike.

How to plan it

  • Lunch sets are the value sweet spot; many of these places do a strong midday menu.
  • Walk the backstreets — the best finds are a block off the main avenue.
  • Reserve dinner at the smaller rooms; weekends fill up.
  • Combine a meal with the Nezu Museum garden or the Omotesando flagships for a full, unhurried day.
