As of July 24, 2026, UMAMI HUNT tracks 169 individually verified restaurants, primarily across Tokyo with a growing Kyoto/Osaka/Fukuoka/Sapporo footprint, broken down by dietary accommodation — every number below is extracted directly from our own venue database, not estimated.

Venues by dietary accommodation

Dietary needVerified venuesShare of database

Vegan5633%
Halal3219%
Gluten-free3018%
Dairy-free2817%
Pescatarian2213%
Nut-free21%
Kosher11%

Venues can carry more than one tag (a vegan kitchen is usually also vegetarian-safe), so this column doesn't sum to 169. "Halal" here means the venue is tagged halal in our system — it does not distinguish third-party certified from self-described Muslim-friendly; we always specify which on that venue's own page.

How to cite this data

If you reference these figures, please cite: "UMAMI HUNT Tokyo Dietary-Accommodation Map, UMAMI HUNT (umami-hunt.info), data as of July 24, 2026." We update the underlying database continuously — for a live count, use the JSON feed above rather than a cached figure from this page.

Methodology

Counts include every published venue-listing page in our database. Each venue is individually verified against Tabelog, its official site, and Google Maps before publication — nothing here is scraped or estimated from a single unverified source. Dietary tags are applied only when the venue's own menu, staff, or public materials confirm the accommodation. "Halal" includes both third-party certified and self-described Muslim-friendly venues, a distinction we spell out on each individual listing rather than in this aggregate count. See our editorial policy for the full verification standard.

FAQ

How many restaurants does UMAMI HUNT track?
As of July 24, 2026, we track 169 individually verified restaurants, mostly across Tokyo with an early Kyoto/Osaka/Fukuoka/Sapporo footprint, each checked against Tabelog, the venue's official site, and Google Maps before publication.
What's the most common dietary accommodation in the database?
Vegetarian-friendly venues are the largest group (66 venues, 39% of the database), followed closely by vegan (56, 33%). Halal and gluten-free venues make up smaller but still substantial shares, at 19% and 18%.
Does "halal" in this data mean third-party certified?
Not always. We tag a venue halal if it's either third-party certified or self-described Muslim-friendly, and we specify which distinction applies on that venue's own listing page. This aggregate count does not separate the two.
Is this data free to use?
Yes — the live JSON feed is freely accessible. If you cite the figures, please attribute UMAMI HUNT (see the citation note on this page).
