Veganic Monkey Magic is a seven-seat, reservation-only vegan counter on the ground floor of a small Asakusa guesthouse, where one chef — known to regulars as "Monkey-san" for the full monkey costume she cooks in — builds a 10-to-14 course tasting menu around whatever pesticide-free, naturally grown vegetables arrived that week.
There’s no printed menu, no fixed courses: you eat what the market gave her, plate by plate, at a narrow counter that seats only a handful of guests. A recent sitting moved through a carrot potage, a natto-and-banana monaka, maitake mushroom over rice, and a daikon "steak," seasoned with the naturally fermented, additive-free condiments she uses instead of bottled sauce. It’s part of a broader philosophy: fertilizer changes how a vegetable tastes, so she buys only from growers who’ve farmed naturally, without it, for years.
She’s less interested in "vegan" as a label than in vegetables that taste like themselves, which is part of why the room reads more like a one-woman performance than a restaurant: expect her, in costume, to talk to the counter between courses. It’s one of the more theatrical vegan meals in the city, built for travelers who want a genuine chef’s-choice evening rather than a buffet workaround.
Reservations are essential — by 3pm the day before, through the restaurant’s bilingual (English/Japanese) Google Form — and it only opens Thursday through Saturday, dinner-only on Thursdays. Each guest is asked to order one drink, alcoholic or not, alongside the meal, and the bill is settled in advance: once you book, the chef emails a payment link rather than charging you at the table. Budget roughly ¥6,000–7,000 per person as of early 2026, and reconfirm pricing when you book, since the menu — and presumably the bill — changes with the season.
