Halal-meat burgers and matcha sweets

Sekai Cafe was a small, unusually welcoming cafe tucked into the Daiban Building just off Kaminarimon -- a two-minute walk from Senso-ji's iconic gate -- built around a simple idea: let Muslim, vegan, vegetarian and allergy-conscious travelers eat at the same table as everyone else, no separate corner required. From the street it read as a "normal fancy cafe" rather than a themed halal restaurant, which was part of the appeal.

The signature order was the Asakusa burger, built on a halal-beef patty and alcohol-free seasoning, alongside a seafood pizza and twelve rotating frappe flavors running from mango to kiwi. For dessert, a vegan creme brulee -- no egg, no dairy -- stood in for the classic, marked with a V so diners didn't have to ask. Roughly twenty seats, a corner set aside for prayer with an arrow marking the direction of Mecca, and English-speaking staff who could talk through ingredients rounded out the pitch; alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks were even kept on separate glassware.

One nuance worth knowing: despite being widely described online as "halal," Sekai Cafe's own positioning -- and this guide's classification -- was pork- and alcohol-free and Muslim-friendly rather than a single third-party halal certification. Some directories, including the Asakusa Tourism Federation's own listing, describe it more confidently as certified, so ask directly if that distinction matters for your trip.

The honest practical note: as of mid-2026, both Tabelog and the halal-dining directory Halal Navi list this Asakusa location as permanently closed, and it hasn't turned up in recent local reporting. Older aggregator listings on Yelp and Tripadvisor haven't caught up to that and still show it as active, so don't take their presence alone as proof it's running. Call ahead or check Google Maps the day of before making a special trip out to Kaminarimon for it.
