Baked rice-flour curry pan and cube-shaped rice-flour shokupan

RICE HACK Gluten-free Bakery is a takeout-only bread stand tucked just off Cat Street in Harajuku, part of the Onden House group, which also runs a gluten-free cafe and cooking school nearby. It has built a loyal following among Tokyo's small but vocal celiac and gluten-intolerant community, and several English-language gluten-free guides to Japan cite it as one of the few dedicated 100%-gluten-free bakeries in the city — genuinely useful for a category (bread) that's otherwise a minefield for visitors avoiding wheat.

Everything is made with Japanese rice flour (the shop specifies a special-cultivation Koshihikari rice), kibi sugar, unrefined salt, and Shirakami Kodama natural yeast, and the bakery states its whole lineup is gluten-free. The gluten-free travel directory Gluten Free Japan lists it as a verified "Celiac Safe: Dedicated Facility," but that's the guide's own vetting process rather than a government or medical certification, and even that listing warns that cross-contamination risk can remain at any restaurant — so travelers with severe celiac disease should still ask staff directly before ordering rather than assume clinical-grade safety. The signature item is the curry bread (¥360, ¥380 with cheese) — a baked, not fried, gluten-free take on karepan, the deep-fried curry bun sold at every Japanese convenience store; reviewers repeatedly single it out as hard to find anywhere else in the country. There's also a chickpea curry bread that's explicitly vegan, a soft baguette (¥600), a denser "cube" loaf (¥700), muffins (roughly ¥320), and a Margherita pizza (¥2,280).

There's no seating at the stand itself — it's grab-and-go — though the cafe next door will let you eat there if you also buy a drink. Hours are limited (Monday 11:00–15:00, Thursday–Sunday 11:00–17:00, closed Tuesday and Wednesday), and popular items sell out by afternoon, so an early visit pays off. It's about a 6–7 minute walk from Meiji-Jingumae or Omotesando stations. English descriptions appear on the shop's own site, and the simple point-and-buy format keeps language barriers low. There's no reservation system — it's a walk-up counter only.
