Vegan Restaurants in Osaka: 5 Genuinely Plant-Based Spots (2026)

Vegan Restaurants in Osaka: What Actually Qualifies
Osaka has five restaurants we've verified as fully plant-based, clustered mostly around Shinsekai, Shinsaibashi/Dotonbori and Umeda -- plus a chain spot with clearly marked vegan dishes on an otherwise omnivore menu, useful if you're travelling with non-vegan friends.
The dashi trap
The single biggest way "vegetarian-looking" food in Japan turns out not to be vegan is dashi -- the stock behind miso soup, okonomiyaki batter, tempura dipping sauce and countless simmered dishes, which is almost always made with katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes) or niboshi (dried sardines). A bowl of vegetables or a plate of tofu can look entirely plant-based and still not be vegan because of what it was cooked or dressed in. None of the venues below use fish-based dashi in their vegan dishes by design -- but assume any other Osaka restaurant marked "vegetarian" is not automatically dashi-free unless staff confirm it.
Shinsekai -- Shinsekai Paprika Shokudou
A fully plant-based izakaya near Shin-Imamiya Station serving vegan takoyaki, kushikatsu and ramen versions of Osaka street food, opened in 2023. No animal products or fish dashi by design. The menu is also labeled gluten-free, but that's the restaurant's own claim rather than a certification -- ask about shared fryers if you're celiac.
Shinsaibashi / Dotonbori area
OKO Takoyaki, a one-woman kitchen a short walk from Dotonbori, makes fully vegan takoyaki and kushikatsu with chickpea flour instead of wheat batter -- naturally wheat-free, though it's a small single-fryer kitchen, so ask about cross-contamination if that matters to you. The Fire, a vegan bar in Nishi-Shinsaibashi, serves vegan ramen (tonkotsu-style and tomato), gyoza and fried rice with an English menu and English-speaking staff -- note the ramen noodles are standard wheat noodles, not gluten-free. A 10-15 minute walk further out in Tanimachi, MERCY Vegan Factory serves a fully vegan Japanese/Western menu across breakfast, lunch and dinner with English-speaking staff; it's closed Saturdays.
Umeda -- Vegan and Gluten Free Osaka
Three minutes from JR Osaka Station, this cafe's entire food menu is vegan and gluten-free by its own description -- the strongest double-claim we found, and it fills a real gap since most other options cluster near Dotonbori. As with Paprika, that's a self-description, not third-party certification -- ask about cross-contamination if you're strictly celiac. Closed Wednesdays and Jan 1-3; walk-in only, no reservations.
Travelling with non-vegan friends
Gyozaoh! Dotonbori, a 50-year-old gyoza chain one minute from Namba Station, isn't a vegan restaurant but carries clearly marked vegan gyoza, vegan ramen and tofu karaage -- a workable compromise for mixed groups.
One phrase to carry
"肉と魚介類、卵、乳製品、かつお出汁も抜いてください" (Niku to gyokairui, tamago, nyuseihin, katsuo-dashi mo nuite kudasai) -- "Please leave out meat, seafood, egg, dairy, and bonito dashi too." Naming dashi specifically is what actually gets it removed.

Places we’ve confirmed
Shinsekai Paprika Shokudou
Vegan takoyaki, kushikatsu and ramen versions of Osaka street food
A fully plant-based izakaya in Shinsekai (opened 2023) serving vegan, gluten-free versions of Osaka street food — takoyaki, kushikatsu and ramen — with no animal products and no fish dashi by design, so it sidesteps the bonito-dashi trap. 'Gluten-free' is the venue's own claim rather than a certification, so celiac diners should confirm dedicated-fryer and cross-contamination handling directly.

FAQ
- Is tofu always vegan in Osaka?
- Not automatically -- tofu itself is plant-based, but it's often simmered or served in dashi made from bonito flakes, so ask specifically whether the broth or sauce contains fish stock.
- Which Osaka neighborhood has the most vegan restaurants?
- Shinsaibashi/Dotonbori, where OKO Takoyaki and The Fire are both a short walk from Namba Station, with MERCY Vegan Factory a further 10-15 minutes away in Tanimachi.
- Is there a place in Osaka that's both vegan and gluten-free?
- Vegan and Gluten Free Osaka in Umeda describes its entire food menu as both, though that's the restaurant's own claim rather than third-party celiac certification.
- Can I bring non-vegan friends to a vegan restaurant in Osaka?
- Gyozaoh! Dotonbori, a long-running gyoza chain near Namba, has clearly marked vegan gyoza, ramen and tofu karaage alongside its regular menu, so it works for mixed groups.
