Plant-based croissants, cinnamon rolls and seasonal-vegetable tartines
Universal Bakes and Cafe is a fully vegan bakery and cafe tucked into a quiet stretch of Daita, about a minute's walk from Setagaya-Daita Station and an easy stroll from Shimokitazawa. Since opening in 2020, it has built a devoted following among Tokyo's plant-based crowd for one simple reason: everything, from laminated croissants to curry buns, is made without eggs, milk, or butter, and none of it tastes like a substitute.
The bakery's signature is the amazake roll -- a soft, chewy bun filled with white bean paste sweetened naturally with amazake, the fermented rice drink, rather than refined sugar. It tends to sell out early, as does the curry bun, whose crisp shell gives way to a rich, well-spiced filling. On weekends, regulars order the cast-iron-skillet French toast topped with vegan ice cream (990 yen), a rare sit-down treat in a shop that's mostly built for grabbing bread and going. Loaves and pastries come out of the oven three times a day -- early morning, midday, and mid-afternoon -- so there's rarely a moment when the case looks picked-over.
Seating is genuinely limited: a handful of stools inside and a small street-facing counter outside, and eating in requires buying a drink alongside your bread. Go early on a weekend if you want a seat, or treat it as a takeaway stop before wandering into Shimokitazawa. Cards, e-money, and QR payments are all accepted, so there's no need to carry cash. The menu isn't translated into English, but the pastry case makes most choices self-explanatory. The shop is closed Mondays and Tuesdays; check its Instagram (@universalbakes_tokyo) before a special trip, since hours can shift around public holidays.

★ Gluten-free crust California pizza (vegan cheese option)
A Roppongi institution since 1996 where homesick Americans and coeliac travellers alike crowd the bar for craft beer and proper gluten-free crust pizza topped with vegan cheese.
AIN SOPH.'s flagship spreads across four Ginza floors, where a ground-floor patisserie of vegan pudding gives way to refined plant-based courses upstairs.
A tiny tatami-floored diner on the Shimokitazawa backstreets where every bowl of rich, medicinal-herb ramen is 100% plant-based and built on sprouted brown rice.
★ Vegan tempura soba and zaru soba with a plant-based broth
A small standing-style soba shop in Shimokitazawa (opened 2024) serving ni-hachi soba with a fully plant-based kombu broth and toppings, so there is no bonito or fish dashi. The noodles are ni-hachi (80% buckwheat, 20% wheat), so it is vegan but not gluten-free; it is daytime-only and closed early in the week, so check hours before visiting.
