- Organic vegetable curries and tandoor naan with vegan, vegetarian and halal options
Nataraj Shibuya is one of three currently operating branches of the Nataraj group, which opened Japan's first vegetarian Indian restaurant back in 1989 (a fourth branch, in Harajuku-Omotesando, has since closed). This location is tucked on the third floor of a building just off Koen-dori, a three-minute walk from Shibuya Station's Hachiko exit.
Inside, chandeliers and marble-topped tables give the room an unexpected formality for a curry house this close to the crossing crowds — the kind of quiet, plant-lined interior that lets a first date or a solo lunch feel equally at ease. The kitchen builds its menu around organic vegetables from the group's own farms, working through around sixteen curries (spinach-and-cheese, mushroom tikka, chickpea, eggplant) alongside naan baked over charcoal with natural yeast and 100% domestic wheat — order it plain, sesame, garlic, cheese, or the vegan komatsuna version. Menus are split cleanly into vegan, vegetarian, halal, and "oriental vegetarian" (no onion, garlic, leek, chive, or asafoetida) columns, so the halal label here means a curated meat-free, alcohol-free menu rather than a third-party certification — worth a quick check with staff if that distinction matters for your diet. Weekday lunch runs a 90-minute buffet (four rotating curries, two naans, turmeric rice, salad, dessert) that's one of the better-value sit-down meals in this stretch of Shibuya.
Reservations can be made online, though groups of ten or more should call ahead; card, IC, and QR payments (PayPay, Rakuten Pay) are all accepted, so there's no need to carry cash. English menus and multilingual staff make it a reliable stop for visitors navigating dietary restrictions in a language they don't speak — note there's a sister branch in Ogikubo under the same name, so double-check the address if a friend recommended "Nataraj" from across town.
