Daily plant-based set of vegetable dishes, brown rice and soup

Gopinatha is a six-seat counter tucked into a quiet residential block east of Nakano Station's north exit — the kind of place you could walk past without noticing, which is rather the point.

The owner, who goes by Sasada, spent twelve years living in India before opening the restaurant in February 2013, not long after Govinda's — the well-loved vegan spot where he once worked — closed its doors. He named the shop after the Gopinatha Temple in Jaipur, and the menu still carries that quiet devotional streak: everything is fully vegan (no meat, fish, eggs, or dairy, a stricter line than the “vegetarian” label suggests), and there is only one dish on offer — a daily-changing set (1,200 yen) built around several small vegetable preparations, brown rice, and soup, plus a rotating homemade dessert like spinach cake or tofu pudding.

Because Sasada runs the kitchen and counter alone, the room asks for a certain hush; solo diners are the norm, and pairs are gently asked to keep conversation low so the handful of seats stay calm rather than crowded. It is an adjustment for some, but it suits the food, which rewards attention rather than chatter.

A practical note: Gopinatha leans cash-only, with PayPay accepted as the one digital workaround — credit cards are not. There is no English menu, but there is also nothing to decipher, since the set meal is the entire menu. The shop is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays, keeps short lunch and dinner windows, and tends to sell out before its posted closing time, so calling ahead or booking through Tabelog is worth doing rather than chancing a walk-in.
