A sister-run cafe whose entire cake and pastry lineup is gluten-free, made with Hokkaido rice flour instead of wheat. As a dedicated gluten-free kitchen the cross-contamination risk is low, but it is a small space, so reserving via Instagram is recommended.

Rice-flour cakes and French-style pastries (madeleines, canelés)

Shimokita Shimai is a sister-run pâtisserie in a quiet corner of Daizawa, between Shimokitazawa and Sangenjaya, where every cake, cookie, and pastry on the shelf is made without wheat flour.

That isn't a side menu — it's the whole shop. The sisters build their batters with Hokkaido rice flour, bake with Hokkaido Yotsuba butter, and sweeten with low-GI Cambodian palm sugar instead of refined white sugar, so there's no wheat-based item anywhere in the kitchen to cross-contaminate the gluten-free ones. The pistachio shortcake — a rice-flour sponge under pistachio cream and whipped cream, cut with a layer of cassis jam — is the one regulars order first, alongside a rotating case of madeleines and canelés built the same way. Seasonal versions (peach in summer, Earl Grey in autumn) show up when the fruit or the mood calls for it, and the sisters also take custom orders for birthday and celebration cakes.

The space itself is small — a handful of seats, most people buy to take away — so plan around that rather than around a table. Tabelog doesn't take bookings for this shop; reserve instead through the "Eat-in Reservations" link in their Instagram bio (@shimokitashimai.cafe), and if you turn up without one, same-day walk-ins are usually fine, just not guaranteed on weekends. Cards and IC cards (Suica and the like) are accepted alongside cash, and the menu is Japanese-only, so it helps to know what you're after — or just point at the case. Nishi-Taishido Station is the closest stop, about a 10-minute walk; it's also a pleasant 12–15 minutes on foot from Shimokitazawa if you're already wandering that neighborhood. Open 11:00–18:00 daily, closed only over New Year.
